Laura Lardy
Cheerful, ravishing wines, full of grace and personality. All these are adjectives that can be used to describe amazing wines made by winemakers who already have a certain experience, with several years of accumulated harvests, something that allows them to get the best out of the grapes they have, which are subsequently going to be improved by the way they are handled in the winery. In this sense, Laura Lardy is like a paradox.
Because her first vintage is from 2017, when she was only 27 years old. Today, at the age of 32, she already has a solid reputation because of her aesthetic interpretation of the region where her 5.5 hectares of leased vineyards are located: Beaujolais. The vineyards were rented from her father, who is also a producer – Laura is a fourth generation element of a winemaker family –, and they are located in Fleurie, Moulin à Vent, Morgon Côte de Py, and Chénas and Beaujolais-Villages. Besides gamay, she also grows chardonnay with both cuvée, white wine direct press and one maceration Orange.
By the time she work the vineyards from her father in 2017, Laura made the immediate decision to work the land according to organic concepts, for if she had always sought to respect the environment in her daily life, her winemaking approach could not follow a different path. And this is how Laura manages to enhance and highlight the versatility and organoleptic capabilities Beaujolais’s grape par excellence: the gamay.
Laura makes around 30 000 bottles annually (with negoce I make the Gourde à Gamay- Beaujolais Villages); in the cellar, she uses the region’s famous technique, (semi) carbonic maceration full bunch/grappe for the gamay. Chardonnay, however, is directly pressed. The wines are vinified in cement tanks and aged in old or neutral oak barrels of different volumes. Fermentations occur naturally with indigenous yeasts and no chemicals are used, except for a minimal amount of sulfur at bottling. Her wines see no filtration or fining.
From barnacles to octopus, from cockles to curry, a guide to choosing wine by the dish, not by the colour.
The most obvious pairing to start with is light, fresh white wines that lift the delicate flavours without overpowering them. Sauvignon blanc and arinto, for
Typical Albillo Real aromas, but with sufficient acidity, some residual sugar and notes of caramel and chamomile. Elegance and delicacy with medium body.
One of Portugal's great red wines! With a truly Atlantic character. Complex on the nose, complex on the palate. The finish is truly impressive. Rather than reading about it, this wine should be drunk alongside a roast from the oven.
A complex and impressive Cabernet Franc, from a 76-year-old vineyard! In the palette of emotions this wine offers us, notes of black fruit wrapped in minty nuances stand out. A real treat!
Full of character! Fruit that is very present, with tannins full of grip, balanced by its excellent acidity. Enveloping and elegant. The finish is long and persistent. Served slightly cool… pure pleasure is guaranteed.
A triumvirate of white grapes from the south of France farmed from 60 to 100-year-old vineyards. At this moment, it shows the balance, complexity, and nuances of wild fruit and wildflowers. It will certainly benefit from aging.
Exhibiting a well-structured freshness, combined with spicy tones. It’s deep and tasty in the mouth, and it will evolve in the bottle over time, in case one resists opening it right now. It is, indisputably, a highly gastronomic wine.
Dark-hued Grolleau, sourced from a small parcel of schist and quartz. Rebellious character, and rustic on the nose. In the mouth, it reveals nuances of dark fruit and a kind of acidity that confers the wine an irresistible balance. Gastronomic wine. Serve a bit chilled.
Red grapes are vinified as white wine. Aged in amphora, it will definitely last many years in the bottle. Decant it, if you can’t resist opening it now.
Full-bodied, deep, robust red, distinguished by spicy notes. To drink now, although it will reward those who are willing to keep it for a couple of years.
